“Age wrinkles the body. Quitting wrinkles the soul.” IMG_9746

Douglas MacArthur

I love the quote above! And how about this other quote below by Theodore Roosevelt:

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.”

It’s true!  Nothing in life worth doing or having ever shows up easy, and when it does, well then that’s just a gift.  Life does not always go the way Instagram or Facebook lets us believe it could.  We need to work!  We need to sweat!  We need to fall!  We need to second guess ourselves!  We need to push ourselves over that edge!  We need to want to quit, because if we don’t need any of these things, we are really not up to anything that big- now are we!

So, the next time you are ready to throw your acting dream or career out the door, IMG_9745because you are at that point- the point where you feel you just have no more energy, will or life to give to it, because you simply feel defeated:

Try taking these 3 steps:

  1. Remind yourself that most people live realistic lives with 9-5 jobs!

Why?  It’s safe!  It’s practical!  It pays the bills!  It involves less stress!  And that’s fine,  but are you really that realistic, logical person who wants a 9-5 job?  Is that the kind of life you signed up for?  And if not, then remind yourself who you are and what you need!  You are an artist- and your path is not as safe!  It’s risky, uncertain and requires a different kind of mindset!  But it’s fun and exciting!  Remember that!  Post it on your wall, or just get that you need this kind of excitement in order to live a fulfilling life, and not many people will get why!  That’s is why you are different!  If it was so easy to live a life filled with dreams, everyone would be doing it!  Right?!

2.  Do NOTHING for a full day!IMG_9744

That’s right!  Do NOTHING!  Take a break!  Get off your computer!  Stop reading! Stop studying! Stop networking!  Stop planning!  Take a breather for a day or even two!  Getting some time to rejuvenate will help your brain to be more creative.  Artists need a break. Heck, everyone needs a break- that’s why they invented vacations!  And take this break without guilting yourself!  This means no social media, no googling, and no stressing!  Just do nothing! Try it- I bet it works!

3. REDIRECT

This means its time to assess your current situation.  First, be honest with yourself and ask:   Do you still really want to pursue your acting dream? If you do, then really get committed to it.  And this means you might need help.  Get an acting coach to help you work on skills and scheduling.  Join a group class so that you can interact with others in the same boat as you, who can also share some of their failures and success stories.  Or, maybe it means taking up your efforts a notch!  You may need to push a little harder!  So why not do it!

You got this, I know you do! And remember, this was not designed to be easy!  If it was, everyone would be doing it, but you are not everyone- now are you?
